Extreme Makeover home in foreclosure

We’ve always wondered how the cash strapped families chosen for Extreme Makeover Home Edition are able to cope after the cameras go away.  Once the film crew leaves, families are left with significantly more square footage to heat and cool and higher tax assessments.  In Hastings, Florida the answer is not very well.

The Harvey family was the recipient of a new 4,000 square foot home from Extreme Makeover Home Edition back in 2005.  Today that home is in foreclosure and if their $128k+ mortgage is not paid in full by February 24th, it will go up for auction at the St. Johns County courthouse.

While its easy to point the finger at Extreme Makeover for leaving the Harvey’s with more house than they could possibly afford to maintain, it is important to note that there was no lien on the home after filming stopped.  Local residents report the Harvey’s took out multiple mortgages on the property in order to fund business opportunities that never took off.

I want to say I think what this show does is wonderful. However I would like to bring to their attention and anyone willing to listen. With the amount of money spent on materials, furnishings, etc, and all the help with volunteers, on just one family
Why aren’t they out in So Dakota helping the Lakota Sioux Native Americans. My gosh they could build 3 to 4 homes simple homes maybe more with the donated materials, volunteers, with out all the decor, buy quality used furnishing etc, These people have nothing!!! Don’t send them on expensive vacations, use the money for another home or winter coats, boots, gloves and hats. Not to mention all that expensive entertainment equipment in every room, one TV per house it’s more than they have now. Is anyone listening?? With all those savings can you imagine what could be built!! How many lives would be changed, the hope it would bring these incredible people!!!! Now that would make a great 2 hour special!! I bet half of Americans would be tuned in to watch!!! Think of all the sponsers!!
Can we please help these beautiful people?? PLEASE!!!! They are the most deserving of all, they were here long before any of us!!!
They are long over due for what is deserving of them! Every single American knows it to be true!!! Whether they want to admit it or not! Thank you 20/20 for bringing it to the attention of so many Americans who truly had no idea!!!

Unfortunately, building nice, clean simple houses for poor people does not make for good T.V. It would be a great idea to build four, clean simple 1,500 s.f. homes rather than one 4,500 luxury home for poor people who cannot maintain it.

Looks like a great idea, but we Americans are so materialized that we have to have 6 tvs in ONE house..we need at least a 2 car garage, don’t forget the entertainment room for all the game systems. THAT’s the American Way!! While we’re on the subject of “helping others”…why are “WE”(Americans), so concerned with 3rd world countries when we have ALL these people right here on American soil sleeping in the streets…..why aren’t we helping “them?”

I love Extreme Makeover and I believe that they do wonderful things for some needy families. But, why in the world do they have to go all out extravagant on one family and one home. They could help so many more families if they just divided up all those supplies and donations instead of using it on just one family. Does a family really need a 4000 sq ft. home? No, they do not. Does the family really need to go on a very expensive vacation? No, they do not. These families could stay back and help build someone else’s home while other volunteers help to build their home. Does each family need to have 6 televisions, computers in every room, basketball courts, expensive furniture, over decorated children’s rooms, 2 car garages, ect? No, they do not. and some of these homes do not even need to be torn down, they could just be remolded. or even donated to another family that lives in worse houses that are not fit to live in. Then there is the issue that some of the families that are receiving help from the show really doesn’t need the help. So of the families have a six figure income each year. They get help because they are foster parents or have adopted a child or children. Not everyone can foster a child or even adopt one because they cannot afford to. That should not be one of reasons for being chosen to be picked for the show. I know for a fact that in our area if a person fosters a child they get a large check each month for each child that they foster, they get food stamps for each child, and other free food from food donation centers for each child. While the show is a great show, they just need to change up the way they do things and not put so much into one family when they could help so many more families that really need the help. Stop all the vacations, expensive technology and furniture and over sized homes so that more people could e helped.
